A to Z Treasures

Searching for treasure has been a part of many cultures throughout time. Ancient explorers spent entire lives searching for that one amazing discovery that would catapult their name into immortality. Whether it was searching for the lost City of Gold or Atlantis, explorers wanted to find the treasures of the past.

In the late 1800s, Alexander Graham Bell invented the metal detector. This invention spurred new generations of treasure hunters (average every day people). These treasure detectives went out to unearth the forgotten items of the past.

Metal detecting has evolved throughout the years. New equipment and materials have helped these hobbyists find rare pieces of history. Metal detecting enthusiasts start out as amateurs. As their skills and equipment progress, they evolve into “Diggers,” the name given to this unique group of metal detecting enthusiasts. While some may search for that ultimate prize of valuable metals or jewelry, many are in it to uncover our lost pieces of history.

Shows such as National Geographic Channel’s Diggers continue to highlight the excitement found with metal detecting. Episodes show different explorations of historical sites to uncover various old relics buried either intentionally or by Mother Nature herself. Old coins, Civil War artifacts (bayonets, bullets, buttons, pocket watches, cannon balls, etc), jewelry, and even gold are some of the many finds metal detecting hobbyists discover on a daily basis. Some metal detecting enthusiasts have made money selling their artifact finds to various museums and collectors around the world.
